Since 1986, Susan Matlack Jones & Associates has provided quality accounting, bookkeeping, and consulting services to not-for-profit organizations. We prepare accurate and meaningful financial statements for our clients' use in effectively managing their resources. We are a team of 15 professionals at an innovative company who values continuous learning in a supportive and kind environment. Our company has a stellar reputation in the nonprofit community. We are located in downtown Portland, two blocks from the mass transit. Our building has a gym, locker rooms, and a bike locker.
We are hiring a full-time Accountant who will perform a wide variety of bookkeeping functions for nonprofit clients. The position reports directly to the Managing Partner.
Who You Are
You have a passion for working with nonprofits.
You’re a detail-oriented person who’s able to maintain a high level of accuracy while meeting client deadlines.
You work well independently or with a small team and are eager to be a part of a supportive and cooperative environment.
Your Experience and Education
You are experienced in double entry bookkeeping.
You have high-level general ledger abilities and knowledge of the accounting process through the preparation of financial statements.
You are proficient at ten key and keyboard skills and have solid expertise in various accounting software, Word, and Excel. Prior history working with Sage 300 (formerly Accpac) is a benefit.
You have a college degree in accounting or business or equivalent experience. Prior work history with nonprofits is beneficial as well.
What You’ll Do
Manage assigned clients’ general ledgers, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll as required by client, with assistance from Accounting Assistants.
Reconcile bank statements. Create spreadsheets, if necessary, for account reconciliation.
Review client coding for cash disbursements and cash receipts. Prepare for entry into the general ledger. Use accounting experience to correct client errors in coding. Balance proof of cash.
Create journal entries, as needed.
Run trial balance and check account balances.
Prepare specifications for financial statements, as needed by each client, and check statements for accuracy.
Create new accounts in the general ledger, as needed.
Design chart of accounts for new clients or re-design for existing clients.
Work with clients’ auditors, as needed.
Help train clients to understand and read financial statements.
Prepare other reports for clients, such as cash flow statements, workers’ compensation reports, and grant reports, as requested.

The salary range for this position is $40,000 - $48,000 annually, depending on experience.
